Paediatric First Aid

Course Description

Paediatric first aid training is required by EYFS Statutory Framework and Ofsted for all primary schools, nurseries and early years providers.  This Level 3 regulated qualification meets the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. The purpose of the course is to ensure participants have the necessary competencies and feel confident to deal with illness or injury for children or infants.

This qualification is available by blended learning.  We can arrange for the theory part of the qualification to be completed by Zoom with a Tutor. The Tutor can visit your premises for the practical and assessment part.  Alternatively, you can attend our training facility in the Peak District.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for:

  • Registered Child minders, Nannies & Babysitters
  • Teachers (Nursery, Primary and Junior)
  • People working with or interested in working in the field of childcare, or anyone with a professional or non-professional responsibility for children.

 

Course Structure

There are two mandatory units with a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 15 hours .  This TQT consists of 12 hours of face to face training and three hours of preparation by reading the course text.

Entry Requirements

Participants must be at least 14 years old on the first day of training.

Assessment

There are 7 practical assessments and 2 multiple choice question papers.

  • Infant CPR and safe use of an AED
  1. Child CPR and safe use of an AED
  2. Choking casualty
  3. Paediatric wounds, bleeding and shock
  4. Unconscious casualty
  5. Management of paediatric fractures
  6. Management of anaphylaxis
  7. Catastrophic bleeding (optional)
Course Location

Qualification Unit 1: Emergency Paediatric First Aid

Learning Outcomes
The Learner will:

  1. Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
  2. Be able to assess an emergency situation safely
  3. Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who are unresponsive
  4. Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who are choking
  5. Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
  6. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who is suffering from shock
  7. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with bites, stings and minor
    injuries

Qualification Unit 2: Managing Paediatric illness, injuries and emergencies

Learning Outcomes
The Learner will:

  1. Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  2. Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected head and spinal
    injuries
  3. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with conditions affecting the
    eyes, ears and nose
  4. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with an acute medical
    condition or sudden illness
  5. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who is experiencing extremes of body temperature
  6. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who has sustained an electric shock
  7. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with burns and scalds
  8. Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected poisoning
  9. Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with anaphylaxis
