Hyperthermia – Introduction

Hyperthermia relates to three conditions and these are:

  • Heat stress
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Heat stroke

A person can have an elevated temperature due to either internal or external factors. An internal factor could be drugs the person is taking and an external factor, the sun. Heat related disorders need to be treated early to prevent escalation to dangerous core temperatures that can result in multi-organ dysfunction and death.

There are often several factors contributing to the heat related disorder which all need to be addressed to reduce the core temperature. One of these is hydration. The chart below gives an indication of good hydration levels.
